Calculate click-through rate from impressions and clicks, then compare it against average organic CTR by Google position to see if a page is over- or under-performing.

Built for CTR calculator

Turn impressions and clicks into a CTR you can act on

A CTR calculator converts raw impressions and clicks into a click-through rate, then puts that number in context by comparing it to the average CTR for your Google ranking position.

It is useful for SEO and PPC reviews where the raw number means little on its own — a 3% CTR is strong in position 8 but weak in position 2, and the benchmark comparison tells you which pages deserve a title and meta rewrite.

Common use cases

  • Check whether a ranking page earns the clicks its position should
  • Spot pages where a better title or meta description could lift CTR
  • Compare ad or email CTR against a simple, consistent benchmark

Average CTR by position

These are published averages for the ten organic results on page one of Google. Use them as the reference point when you enter an average position into the calculator above: the question that matters is not “is my CTR high?” but “is my CTR higher than what this position normally earns?”

Source: First Page Sage, “Google Click-Through Rates (CTRs) by Ranking Position” — a meta-analysis of Backlinko, Sistrix, Wordstream, BrightLocal and LocalIQ data, last updated May 2025. The figures describe standard organic result sets; First Page Sage reports different numbers for SERPs carrying a local pack, and the third column is simple arithmetic on the published CTR.

Treat any CTR-by-position table as directional rather than exact. Published estimates for position 1 range from roughly 20% to 40% depending on whether the dataset leans informational or branded, mobile or desktop, and how many SERP features sit above the organic results. The benchmark built into the calculator above uses a more conservative blended curve for the same reason.

What is a good CTR?

A good CTR is one that beats the average for the position you actually hold. A 5% CTR is excellent in position 5 and poor in position 2 — the same number, read two completely different ways. That is why the calculator asks for your average position: it turns a raw percentage into a comparison against the table above.

Intent and branding move the number just as much as position does. Branded queries, where searchers already know who they are looking for, routinely clear 30-40% even outside the top spot, while broad informational queries under-perform the averages because searchers browse several results or get their answer on the SERP itself. Compare branded and non-branded queries separately in Search Console, or you will average two very different behaviours into one misleading figure.

Google’s AI Overviews are compressing organic CTR further — when an answer is assembled above the results, more searches end without a click, so a page can hold its ranking and still lose traffic (AI overview tracking for those keywords). In practice: find pages ranking 2-10 whose CTR sits below their position average, rewrite the title and meta description to match intent, then re-measure. Once you know how many extra clicks the fix is worth, run them through the SEO ROI calculator to price the work before you commit to it.
