Rankealo

WordPress.com

Connect a WordPress.com-hosted site with an OAuth access token. Rankealo can publish new articles and update existing ones on your WordPress.com site.

For WordPress.com hosted sites, you need an OAuth access token. This is different from self-hosted WordPress which uses Application Passwords.

What you'll need#

  • A WordPress.com site where your account has the Author, Editor or Administrator role (it must be allowed to publish posts).
  • A WordPress.com developer application (free) to obtain an OAuth access token.
  • Your site address only (e.g. yoursite.wordpress.com) — no https:// and no path.

Step 1 — Get your credentials#

WordPress.com uses OAuth access tokens — not Application Passwords (those are for self-hosted WordPress).

  1. 1
Go to developer.wordpress.com/apps and choose Create New Application; set a redirect URL you control.
  2. 2
Note your Client ID and Client Secret.
  3. 3
Send yourself to https://public-api.wordpress.com/oauth2/authorize with response_type=code, your client_id and redirect_uri, and scope=global (or scope=posts, media for a narrower token), then approve the site.
  4. 4
Exchange the returned code at https://public-api.wordpress.com/oauth2/token (grant_type=authorization_code) to receive the access token.
  5. 5
Copy the access token — you will paste it into Rankealo. Tokens can be revoked or expire; if publishing starts failing, generate a new one.

Step 2 — Connect in Rankealo#

In Rankealo, open Integrations, choose WordPress.com, and fill in these fields:

FieldRequiredWhere to find it
WordPress.com Site URLRequiredYour site address, e.g. yoursite.wordpress.com. Enter the bare address (no https://, no path); Rankealo rejects anything else.
Access TokenRequiredThe OAuth access token from the WordPress.com developer flow.

Click Test Connection. Rankealo verifies your credentials — you must see a successful test before Save Integration becomes available.

Updating credentials later

Secrets are write-only. When you reopen a saved integration, secret fields show “leave blank to keep existing” — only re-enter them if you are rotating keys.

What gets synced#

When Rankealo publishes, each article carries:

  • TitleThe article title.
  • ContentFull article body as HTML (or markdown where the platform supports it).
  • Meta descriptionSEO meta description / excerpt, where the platform has a field for it.
  • SlugGenerated from the title when the post is created; an existing post with that slug is linked instead of duplicated. Never changed on update.
  • ExcerptThe meta description is sent as the post excerpt.
  • Featured imageThe image URL is passed to WordPress.com, which fetches it (on create and update). It may be skipped if WordPress.com cannot download it.
  • TagsThe target keyword is added as a tag on create only. Categories are not set.

Slug, featured image, tags and SEO title depend on the platform and your field mapping. Each platform guide lists exactly what it sends.

Updates & re-publishing#

Rankealo tracks the post it created for each article. When an article is edited — or automatically re-optimized by Improvements — Rankealo updates the same post in place rather than creating a duplicate.

Troubleshooting#

Test connection fails with an authentication error+
Regenerate the access token and confirm it has publish permissions for your site. Tokens can expire — create a fresh one if unsure.
Wrong site URL format+
Use your WordPress.com subdomain (yoursite.wordpress.com), not a custom domain alias unless that is how your site is registered in WordPress.com.
Self-hosted vs. WordPress.com confusion+
If you run your own wordpress.org install, use the WordPress (self-hosted) guide instead — it uses Application Passwords.
